The History of Gledhill
Albert H. Gledhill, Sr., established Gledhill in 1922. He transformed a piece of wet farmland of four acres into a park-like setting that attracted visitors to a growing nursery operation in an uncommon setting. For fifty-five years Gledhill operated the nursery as a farmer (growing plants), a tree service, a landscape company (installing and maintaining) and a small garden center.
In 1975, Robert Powell, “discovered” Gledhill while on vacation from Louisiana. After a mutual meeting of the minds of two people with similar interest and philosophies, Gledhill decided to retire and to sell the business and land to Powell.
In December 1975, Powell took over the operation and began to add his own personality to Gledhill. After having managed a landscape design and construction company in New Orleans, with a degree in Landscape Architecture and the experience of having worked in Disneyland in California, Powell had some special ideas for the future of Gledhill. He has expanded the present acreage to nine, and has been busy ever since, adding touches that have attracted much public attention, including that of artists, photographers, TV shows and commercials. It has been widely accepted as one of the most unique Garden Centers and Landscape Companies in the country.
A new building was added in 1996. The structure includes a Garden Center sales facility with greenhouse, gift shop, meeting rooms, landscape offices, and storage. This facility has enabled Gledhill to grow and to become a more competitive force in the area garden market.
The direction and philosophy of the business has been to concentrate on customer service through landscape design and construction, and a garden center which is known for quality and out-of-the-ordinary garden items.
With an established reputation and a commitment to customer service, continued growth, and company pride, Gledhill is a business that we are proud to share with you.
